It was an eventful Tuesday morning, and i had just returned from College for a two hour break . Just like any other day , i took off my shoes , stretched my legs on the couch and turned on the t.v. Since the start of the academic year i promised myself not to indulge in Political shows therefore i paid little attention to all the local news channels over the course of two months now. Sports being my true , eternal love, i always switch to those channels which featured any form of sport.
I do not know if it was instinct or curiousity but something in my head told me to turn to the news channel just to see what was happening in the country around. Little did i know that i would read a headline that would send shivers down my spine. Malala Yousef (a 14 year old peace activist, who wrote a diary highlighting her life in Swat amidst the inhumane rule of Taliban) was shot in the head as she was returning home from school !!
I re-read the bold red highlighted headline , to make sure i was right . Indeed my eyesight hadnt deceived me , it was all true , sad but true.
MY first instincts were to call my mother(whom i call ‘ami’) from the kitchen and tell her haphazzardly what had happened. Her jaw dropped and instantly she raised her hands to the sky and called for the Almighty to save her life . Unable to switch back to my tennis match , i sat on the couch , my cupped hands over my mouth , praying for the life of young Malala .
Shootings and targeted attacks in my country are nothing new , especially on those people who dare to speak the truth . BUt along with every Countryman , i too was under the impression that how could the Taliban be threatened by a fourteen year old school girl ? How much damage could she have done to their already shattered image across the world? Did they have no remorse when approaching a van full of young school girls and targetting the one MAlala they wanted DEAD ?
The only question that arose in my mind after the uneventful tragedy was that , will everyone who voices their opinion against terrorism, extremism etc , be silenced by the Nay -sayers like Malala ? Is this some sort of sign by those cowards who call themselves ‘muslims’ , for us , the ones who dare to speak ?
How long do we keep quiet and let them control our lives ? Clearly our care-takers (government) dont have the situation under control ! So is it time the army intervened …. So many ideas pass through ones mind but no one is there to answer or solve them…
For now one can only Wait and PRAY for the recovery of Malala . For surely she is a star of my nation, my sister who i havnt met, but the one who has given me strength to speak the Truth !!
